Reader Response Activities
Response Choice 1: Write a short story
Using your new knowledge about immigrants and what the process was like, create a fictional character and write a short story about his/her immigration experience. Be sure to include their reasons for immigration, the process once they arrived on Ellis Island, and their life after they arrived in the United States. This piece should be 1 - 2 pages long.

Response Choice 2: Reflection
After reading Ellis Island, you should have a better understanding of the immigration process. Using this information, write a reflection piece. This writing assignment is open-ended, but a few suggestions are: Write about how you would feel if you were an immigrant, write about how it made you feel to read about what your ancestors went through, write about why this time period is important to history, or write about what you found when you explored the website and discovered your ancestors records (or anyones records).

Response Choice 3: Draw a story board
Using a story board (or comic strip) format, draw a few scenes that you feel are most important in depicting the process of immigration through Ellis Island. Along with each scene, there should be a short explanation ( 3 - 4 sentences) to describe what the scene is about, and why you felt it was important. The story board should consist of at least five scenes and have rational reasoning for importance.
